IELTS Speaking Topic Part 2: Favorite Photograph

Favorite Photograph

1. When did you take the photo?
2. Do you like the photo?
3. What kind of story does the photo depict?

There was a time when photos where only taken by a camera, but now everything has changed. Computers and mobile phones have enabled people to take a lot of photos and I think people take billions of photos everyday in this world. I myself take so many photos that I sometimes forget which photograph did I take and when did I take it. There is one of my photographs which I like the most. This photograph is very beautiful.

I like the photograph very much. In this photograph I am carrying my niece and she smiling at me. I saw the photograph about a week ago. I did not even know that the photograph existed until my sister showed it to me. I liked to so much that I made it the wallpaper of my computer and whenever I open the computer the first thing I see on the computer is that photograph.

The photo shows happiness. I think it was taken 4 years ago, and shows how time passed by and how the worlds changes. After looking at the photograph I remembered that my niece was crying a lot and my sister was giving her to the maid, but as I decided to hold her in my arms she got happy and smiled and that was the moment when the photograph was taken. The photograph shows a time when I was happy and a time when used to have an optimistic view of the world but now all optimism and love has just vanished from my life.

Talk about my favorite TV programme

Favorite TV program

http://msielts.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/q152.jpg

I’m going to talk about my favorite TV program, which is Dr Who.
It is a science fiction show and chronicles the adventures of a time traveling alien known as The Doctor and his human companions through space and time.

I usually  watch it once a week when it airs on TV. However, I also have the series on DVD and often find myself having Dr Who marathons on weekends.

I love the show not only for its imaginative storyline, but also for the portrayal of the complexities that arise from a life of time traveling, which are mind numbingly fascinating. The tenor is balanced between light comic moments and grave solemn ones. The reason its my favorite, though, is because it opens my mind to what the future may hold and also instills a new wonder for our past.
Here is the original question from last week.

IELTS Speaking Part 2: describe a film/movie

Describe a film/movie

You will find reviews of almost any film, from The Godfather to Titanic.
The only problem is that the reviews are often quite difficult or too detailed. I recommend stealing a few ideas or a few bits of good vocabulary.
For example, here is some good vocabulary from a review of The Godfather:
- one of the greatest films ever made
- a masterpiece
- a brilliant story
- the actors' performances are outstanding
- it's compelling to watch
Make sure you can summarise the film's plot (the story). Try to remember where and when you first saw the film. Explain how it made you feel and why you like it.

IELTS Speaking Part 2: describe a website

Describe a website

Describe a website that you often use. You should say:
  • what type of website it is
  • how you found out about it
  • what it allows you to do, and why you find it useful.
Here are some ideas, with some of the band 7-9 vocabulary underlined:
  1. Facebook is a social networking website. It's a free website that allows you to keep in contact with friends or find people you've lost touch with. It's one of the most popular websites in the world, with millions of users in different countries.
  2. All of my friends use Facebook. One of my friends sent me an email inviting me to join. I signed up and I've been using it ever since.
  3. Facebook allows you to keep up to date with what friends are doing. You have a profile page with information and status updates so that you can tell everyone what you're doing. You can post messages to other people's pages. You can upload photos and videos. I find Facebook most useful for organising my life, keeping in touch with friends and storing photos. I think social networking websites have become part of everyday life.

Describe one of your favourite electronic media like TV / printing media / radio etc.

  • what is it and why it's your favourite
  • what do you do with it
  • why it's useful for you
and describe the advantages and disadvantages of this media

Model Answer:
My favourite electronic media is TV and I guess this is the most popular electronic media in the world. With the popularity of the satellite and diversity and quality of the programs offered by different channels, people started liking the TV programs more than ever. With the TV satellite network connection, watching more than 500 channels cost a very little amount.

Television offers various kinds of channels and people can easily pick the channels they like. News, Movies, documentary, entertainment, soap opera, music, sports, lifestyle channels offers entertainment as well as different information and news. People heavily rely on TV news for latest and international news. The audio visual representation of news and information in TV are easier to grasp than other media like radio and magazines. I watch news, documentary, movies and music on TV. There are lots of channels that offer specialized programs for people and among them I find National Geographic, Discovery, BBC are very reliable and authentic source of information.

I can’t always catch up with the newspaper and can easily get updates from TV in few minutes. I get sports news and can watch live games on TV. The main advantages of television are the ease with which it offers news, information and entertainment. One can easily watch TV while getting involved in other tasks which is quite impossible for other media like print media. The variation of program and channels offered are helpful for people to easily pick one’s favourite channels. We can watch live events and news on TV and with the advancement of technology; it has become easier for everyone to own a TV.

The main disadvantage of this media is that, it is addictive. People become addicted to TV programs and thus often spend more time watching TV than they should have. Biased news sometimes mislead people and causes non-avoidable conflicts. Too much time spent on watching television has some health issues and specifically harms kids who watch TV for a long time. Apart from that, Some TV channels broadcasts programs which are not suitable for all and this can cause harms to people.

Similar Cue Card topics:

Your ability to talk about this Cue Card Topic would enable you to talk about the following Cue Card Topics as well:
  1. Describe your favourite source of news.
  2. Describe a TV channel you like.
  3. Describe a newspaper of magazine you often read.

Read as much as you can. Reading 3 passages is not a hard task if you could form of habit of reading novels. The habit can be formed by reading novels before sleeping.

Read the questions first. There are going to be very few people who are actually going to form a habit of reading books. Most are just going to apply the strategies and techniques.

IELTS Reading Tip no.3:  Divide your work
When you are reading the questions, please divide the questions in two parts and try to retain the information you get in the questions. It is very important to remember what the questions were asking.

It is important to remember the information in the questions because the questions are not going to move in the chronological order and you might find the answer anywhere in the passage.

IELTS Reading Tip no.11:  Skimming and Scanning
There are many people who would know about the technique which commonly known as skimming and scanning, but very few people actually know how to apply this technique.  Skimming is by which a candidate would only look at the first and last 2 sentences of the paragraph and by scanning the important information is taken out.

IELTS Reading Tip no.12:  No shortcuts
There are no short cuts to get a good score on the reading section of the IELTS exam. Instead of practicing exams you should spend maximum time reading novels.

IELTS Reading Tip no.13: No use of practicing
Practicing is important, but there is no benefit of practicing the wrong thing. There are students who have absolutely no knowledge about English and they expect to get Band 7 just by doing 3 to 4 practice exams.

IELTS Reading Tip no.14: No one can learn English in a month
English is a language which is developed over the years. If you have not completed education from a good school it is highly recommended that you search for a country which is requiring band 6 or less for admission. There is no possible way to dodge the IELTS examiner. In order to get a good IELTS score you will have to know very good English.

IELTS Reading Tip no.15:  Set a reasonable target
I would not go to the extent of saying that you will have to learn all 800,000 words of English language but it would be a good exercise to learn some essential vocabulary words which are required for the IELTS exam.

IELTS Reading Tip no.21:  You have to paraphrase in order to ace
You should be really good at paraphrasing in order to get good marks on the IELTS exam. Just try to do at least 2 to 3 exercises of paraphrasing every day. Paraphrasing is the activity by which you use different words to say the same meaning and this is something you would need to do for the fill in the blanks.

IELTS Reading Tip no.22:  Fill in the blanks from one paragraph
If you are given a paragraph where you will have to fill in the blanks, there is a good chance that you would be able to get the answers from one paragraph. The process for these questions is to look for the answers from the passage and then get a similar word or the suitable word from the table given to you.

IELTS Reading Tip no.23:  Find the suitable heading
To find the most suitable heading for a paragraph, you need to read the first and last 2 lines of the paragraph and paraphrase them. In simple words you just try to read the first and last 2 lines of the paragraph and summarize them in your mind.

IELTS Reading Tip no.24:  Time Trap
There is going to be one passage which is going to be very difficult and at the same time a “Time Trap”. You should have the ability to identify which passage is going to be difficult and just leave it and do it in the end.

Manage your time efficiently. Spend 15 minutes on the first two passages and spend 20 minutes on the last passage.

IELTS Reading Tip no.26: Match the sentences
Look at the first 2 and last 2 lines of the paragraph to get the information.

IELTS Reading Tip no.27:
Every IELTS candidate hates True, False and Not Given questions. The problem is that in order to do these questions the student also has to have some knowledge about English Grammar. Unfortunately most Pakistanis have pathetic English Grammar due to which they get the questions wrong.

IELTS Reading Tip no.28: Common Types of questions
Give a proper Heading
Multiple Choice Questions
Fill in the blanks
Match the information
Answer the Questions

IELTS Reading Tip no.29:
Transferring the answers to the answer sheet

IELTS Reading Tip no.30:
5 questions are going to be concerned with difficult words

IELTS Reading Tip no.31: Over confidence is going to kill you
You are never going to find these kinds of reading passages every in your life as they are very very tricky. If you give this kind of reading passage to a native speaker of English Language there are chances that the person will just tear the paper. Just concentrate on the information which has been given to you never deduce things from the information which has been given to you.

IELTS Reading Tip no.32: Words in context
Try understanding words in context as it is impossible to learn or memorize every word of English.  This is not a Pakistani exam so that means there are not going to be any shortcuts. People with good schooling are the ones who get good band score. Instead of wasting Rs 19,000 it would be better that you do not even take the exam if your English is poor.

IELTS Reading Tip no.33:
There are going to about 10 questions which are going to be time consuming. By time consuming I mean you would not be able to find the answers for those questions by adopting the normal reading IELTS techniques. Instead of wasting your time on them you should leave them and do them in the end.

IELTS Reading Tip no.34:
Stop accusing start working. It does not matter what your past is. I have seen students regretting about their past and ending up doing nothing in their present to make their future. Even if everything went bad in the past, it does not mean you cannot correct things now.

IELTS Reading Tip no.35:
There is a good exercise in which an IELTS Instructor is going to ask you find specific words in the passage. Instructor would also ask you to tell the number of times a certain word is repeated in the passage. This might give you a headache the first time you do it, but it will enhance your ability to skim and scan in a much better way.

IELTS Reading Tip no.36:
After you have practiced enough practice exams you would now know which questions are the ones you can attempt easily and which are the ones which need more practice. Even in the exam you should first endeavor to attempt the questions which you know well.

IELTS Reading Tip no.37:
If you keep scoring less than 25/40, it means that you have terrible English. Practice is just going to waste your time. The reason you are not getting the marks is that your overall English is too weak and you should give yourself ample time to do a Basic English course which would last for at least 6 months. There are two things which could have happened either you did not study properly or your school did not teach you properly.

IELTS Reading Tip no.38:
There is going to be difference in the reading sections of the Academic and General Training versions, but there is a technique which I am going to tell you. You should start your reading practice from the passages of General Training practice exams and it the last few weeks of your practice you should practice form the academic version. It does not matter which version you are attempting, you just have to follow the technique which I mentioned earlier.

IELTS Reading Tip no.39:
Read a paragraph and write down what you understood. Some people believe that reading section of the IELTS is all about skimming and scanning but it is very important to understand the meaning of the paragraph and you will also have to retain the information you read.

IELTS Reading Tip no.40:
If you are person who is dreaming of getting Band 7 or higher on the IELTS exam, you should spend at least 6 months for the complete preparation. Believe me that preparation of the reading has nothing to do with doing practice, these are two completely different things. You might be one of the students who would not even have to prepare for the exam and still get your desired score.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.15: Do not memorize

You would be able to find many speaking topics and their sample answers and I would even encourage you to read them in order to have an idea about the topic, but never memorize the topics because that would lead to great ambiguity in your mind. Even if a single word of the topic is change you will end on speaking on the wrong thing.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.14: Ask the examiner to repeat

If you fail to understand what the examiner is saying it is recommended that you ask the examiner to repeat the question. There is a high probability that the examiner would ask the question in a simpler way when asked to repeat the question.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.13: Speak Slowly

An average speaker speaks anywhere from 200 to 300 words in 2 minutes. You would not be required to speak a specific number of words, so please do not speak quickly. I have seen a lot of my students taking their score down just by speaking quickly and when a person speaks quickly many mistakes are made.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.11: Complete sentences

Avoid giving answers in YES or NO. The exam requires from you to speak complete sentences. To keep it simple I would say that whenever a question is asked from you, you have to combine 5 WHY’s.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.9: Confidence does not exist

I see people talking about confidence and hesitation all the time, but has anyone ever understood the real meaning of confidence. There is no such thing as confidence. Having no confidence does not mean you would not be able speak English, you will only not be able to speak English if you do not know how to speak it.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.8: Everyone takes a pause

The fact is that everyone takes a pause. We are not machines. It is normal to take a pause but it is normal to stop. We should avoid stopping as when a person stops it is difficult to start again and it often leads to confusion and tension. So keep one thing in mind that pause is ok, but stopping is a crime.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.7: Speak in front of people

If your teacher is going to make you speak in front of people that is actually a good thing, you should not take it negatively. If you are a reasonable person you would get motivated from this process and try to speak better in order to save yourself from the embarrassment, but if you are a paranoid you will just keep silent and demotivate the entire class.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.5: Improve your response time

IELTS Speaking Tip no.5: Improve your response time

The only way to improve your response time is to speak. You will have to speak for at least 100 hours. There is no point of joining an institute to improve your speaking skills as you would only be speaking for 10 minutes and you would be stopping again and again. If you are serious about being fluent at speaking English the best way to do so would be to start teaching.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.4: Lexical ability

Speaking Tip no.4: Lexical ability

Your lexical ability deals with your ability to use different words in your speech. If you ever record your speech you would notice that you would be using the same words again and again, but this is not permissible in the IELTS exam. You should be using different words to say things.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.3: Drop the fake accent

IELTS Speaking Tip no.3: Drop the fake accent
Just because you watch English movies and you see actors acting in the movies does not mean that you have to act while speaking English. When I teach students I observe that more than 70% of the students adopt a fake accent as they do not know about the rules of stress and unstress and they are actually thinking they are speaking good English.

IELTS Speaking Tip no.2: Stress and Unstress

IELTS Speaking Tip no.2: Stress and Unstress

Stress and Unstress is the process by which you can pronounce the words in the correct manner. The problem is that this thing is not taught in Pakistani schools so most Pakistanis do not have an understandable accent and they end up getting less than 6.5 on the IELTS  exam.

IELTS Sample Example Essay for Band 8

Animals also have emotions and feel equal pain as humans. We should stop all pharmaceutical companies from doing trials on innocent animals. Give your opinion in not less than 250 words.

All drugs need to be tested for their accurate effects and toxicity, before entering the consumer markets. Majority of these tests include animal testing.

Animal rights activists call it an unethical practice, as these trials subject animals to severe pain and suffering. They say that the researchers infect poor animals with the disease or a particular medical condition and then give them un-administered quantities of drugs.

Animals have been serving and benefiting mankind since the earliest recorded times. There is evidence of animal testing for medical research even in the Greek texts. The nineteenth and twentieth century saw great advancements in the fields of medicine and biochemistry. All these researches employed extensive animal testing.  The first zoos were created by medical researchers to breed and test animals in captivity.  Life saving drugs, vaccines, and antibiotics were created for example; penicillin was discovered and given to fight against diabetes. Fatal viral infections such as anthrax were countered while small pox was completely eradicated in the twentieth century through the vaccination. In 1996 the first successful animal cloning marked the beginning of a new era in the field of genetics and bio-chemistry. Medication for reducing the effects of cell degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s is now available.

Advocates of animal rights believe that animal testing is no more required due to the availability of other advanced testing techniques. They also question the reliability of these tests. They speculate that the pain inflicted upon the animals changes its physiology thus altering the results. Some also say that the effects in animals are not applicable for humans.  Contrary to what they may say, specific scientific researches cannot rely completely on artificial testing methods and live animals need to be used.  Otherwise, if not properly tested for toxicity, the drugs can cause irreparable damage to mankind.  Many Infantile deaths, birth defects and aborted pregnancies have been reported in such cases in the past.

In respect of saving both human and animal lives, if available, animals should be replaced by reliable alternate testing methods. This would in turn reduce and limit their use to only necessary scientific research.  Refined methods should be used to alleviate the unnecessary pain in animals. Animal testing cannot be completely banned but pharmaceutical companies should be licensed for specific research. Also, such trials should be properly administered.

IELTS Sample Essay for Band 7

Researches done in different fields have their own set of standards; experiments in science are also liable to some principles.  When a common man refers to research they signify something that follows specific steps to get results.  Scientific community around the globe have made easy this concept by dividing into two major areas which are “Pure” and “Applied” research.  Applied research is more common today in sciences like medicine, biology, physiology and education.  Most researchers in variety of fields such as educational institutions, military, hospitals, consumer products involve the use of animals from all species as fish, rodents, monkeys, cats, dogs, and birds conduct various tests and results help in finding solutions for human diseases especially life threatening, advancement in knowledge, household products and cosmetics.  Such methods have been in use for more than two hundred centuries now.

Scientists claim that experimentation on animals has been helpful in estimating and generating results but animal lovers claiming that animals have feelings like humans think the other way.  Scientists argue that experimentation has benefitted in founding theories about behavior such as Ian Pavlov’s Classical conditioning, explaining DNA structure and finding cure for early epidemics as cholera, measles and malaria.  Today, ninety percent of countries are using animals.  Animal lovers, however, say that such testing places the non-humans under a lot of pain as well as torture.  They get threatened, lonely, scream but cannot run away as ultimately they would be killed.  People from animal organizations such as PETA, that is, “People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals” are now proclaiming plus trying to protect animal rights.  For more than twenty years now, these organizations and scientists both are actively advertising their cause through media along with social campaigns.  Results show awareness among the ordinary man and difference of views.

Both groups have reached state and government offices demanding relevant laws acceptable to both.  Indeed, animal protection acts and scientific guidelines such as the “Three R’s” have been provided but the conflict is getting intense.  Countries like India, China, Netherlands and UK have made an effort to stop animal testing and have already banned.  Non-animal testing procedures are being devised.  Certainly animal testing is helpful in finding cure however it should be done within set rules to reduce or if possible prevent the pain.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Topic: Wedding Event

Wedding event

Which was the last wedding you attended?
Describe the event?
Did you enjoy?

The last wedding I attended was of my best friend’s brother. To describe the wedding in one word I would say it was simply spectacular. I am right now working in another city so because of the wedding I got a chance of going to my native city because the wedding was held in my native city.
I simply have no idea about who decorated the place and who did the arrangements but I know what thing and it is that the whole place looked as if it was a royal wedding. I could see perfection everywhere. I was happy very to be there. I got to the place at time and when I reached there I was able to meet a lot of old friends. We were able to catch up and it was really fun talking to them. The most exciting was the food. I have always had a liking for the food which is served in weddings because it is mostly spicy and tasty.
I enjoyed a lot. Wedding ceremonies in my country are never without songs. There were many dances and as a matter of fact I also danced on the insistence of my friends. At first I was feeling really embarrassed but eventually everything turned out really well. I also liked the way bride was dressed up. They were looking very different and good. After looking at the couple I felt good about the whole idea of marriage and felt a certain kind of inclination towards which process.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Topic: Graduation Ceremony

Graduation ceremony

When did you graduate from school?
What preparation did you have to make for the ceremony?
How was the overall experience?

I graduated from my school in 2004. If I calculate it, it would be 9 years ago. Some people say that it was just yesterday but I think that I do not even remember the event properly and if would be real hard for me to recall all those memories. In Pakistan, graduation mostly referred to 14 years of education, but in the international educational system students also graduate after completing High School Diploma, and I am going to talk about the ceremony when I graduated from my school which was International School of Choueifat.

We all were to make our own arrangements of buying suits and as far the rehearsal for the real occasion was concerned it was primarily done by the management of the school. They told us everything about the day and they also sent invitation cards to the parents of the students who were to graduate, so I would say that were pretty much doing whatever we were told to do.

The only thing I know about the graduation ceremony was sadness. Most people refer to graduation ceremony as a time when they felt proud or they felt happy, but I was feeling sad. It was painful to leave all of friends and the most painful part was that I was to leave the school in which I studied for 12 years. I never actually loved the school, but as the graduation ceremony was being held I realized that I was never to see these walls again and I was never to see these halls again but then I realized that everyone has to move on in life and this time it was turn to move on.

IELTS Speaking Part 2 Topic: A business you want to start

A business you want to start

What business do you want to start?
Would you require certain skills to start this business?
How would your life change after this business?

Everyone wants to start a business, but very few get to keep it running it. Since my childhood I have always had a dream of starting my own business. I believe that business is all about doing things which others cannot afford to do. I want to start my own college where I could provide good quality education to the people. I know that this business is not very feasible and things might be ugly on my end, but I think that if I do my business with complete commitment and my luck favors me I would be able to benefit from this thing.
I have always been a slow learner in school. I would not say that I was dumb but I could say that I always had to understand thing completely before grasping the main idea of the thing. This quality has made me a good teacher and this quality helps me identify what things might confuse or irritate the students. This quality of understanding the problems of the students can be regarded as a very important skill in establishing a college. I am also aware of the fact that skills are not the only things which will help me become successful in life and I will surely have to inject some capital to keep my business running.

IELTS Speaking Topic Part 2: Favorite Player

Favorite Player

Who is your favorite player?
What sport does he or she play?
Why do you regard him or her as your favorite player?

My favorite player is Shahid Afridi. He is a very popular player in my country and many people around the world love and admire him. He is cricketer and I think he has been playing cricket for the last 14 years. He started playing cricket at a very young age and in the initial years of his career became very popular and was able to make place in the Pakistan cricket team.

His playing style is completely different than those of other players. Whenever he is on the crease one can expect fun and sixes. That is the reason he is often referred to as boom boom Afridi. Recently he has not been performing well with the bat, but his bowling is still outstanding and he is the leading wicket taker in every match he plays.

I had heard about the player a lot but I did not like him that much. I watched a match and everything changed. It was a cricket match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka and he scored a century in only 40 balls. I was really impressed by his batting style. He is not only a good batsman, but also a very good bowler. Everyone around him regards him as one of the best all-rounders in the world. He has helped the Pakistani team win a lot of matches and he is considered to be an asset for the cricket game. Now I like him so much that whenever he come to bat, my heart starts to beat very hardly and cannot remain on the chair and I start walking to lessen my tension.

IELTS Speaking Topic Part 2: Favorite Photograph

Photo

When did you take the photo?
Do you like the photo?
What kind of story does the photo depict?

There was a time when photos where only taken by a camera, but now everything has changed. Computers and mobile phones have enabled people to take a lot of photos and I think people take billions of photos everyday in this world. I myself take so many photos that I sometimes forget which photograph did I take and when did I take it. There is one of my photographs which I like the most. This photograph is very beautiful.

I like the photograph very much. In this photograph I am carrying my niece and she is smiling at me.

IELTS Speaking Topic Part 2: Airport

Airport

When was the time you visited the airport?
Describe the airport?
Why did you go to the airport?

I went to an airport 7 months ago. I went to airport because I had to go to Dubai. I was going to Dubai for a pleasure trip and I was excited about it. I was going with my friends so my family came to see me off and it was the first time I went to the airport to travel abroad. Before this I had gone to a railway station, but I had never gone to an airport for travelling and it was my first experience about airport.

The name of the airport was Allama Iqbal International Airport. The airport is located in my native city and it is a very huge airport. It would be very difficult for me to compare it with other airports of the word because I have never been to other countries, but if I compare this airport with airports in my country I would definitely regard it a very beautiful airport.

As I entered the airport there was a very strict security check, and I had to go through a lot of barriers before getting to the airplane. I was told to show my passport and ticket again and again. At some point I started thinking as if I had committed a crime by going to the airport, but in the end I realized that all the stuff was just to ensure that the passengers get safely to their destination. I would advise people not to travel alone the first time they travel on an airplane because the person traveling would definitely get confused by the procedure which the airport staff follows.
