Sample IELTS Speaking Response:

I enjoy playing various kinds of brain games online. There are a number of different websites I visit on a regular basis in order to play these games by myself. The objective of the games is to exercise different areas of your brain so that you preserve and enhance your memory and also expand and develop your brain capacity.
The games are of various kinds. Some enable you to practice your verbal skills. Others test logical reasoning, spatial skills and visual memory. I can keep track of my scores, so that each time I play, my goal is to do better than in the past – to outdo myself, so to speak. In addition, if I want, I can compare my scores to others who play online. This aspect is intriguing, but frankly it doesn't interest me much. I don&'t regard this as a competition with anyone else. It is something I do simply to sharpen my mental abilities and improve myself.
In fact, one of my favorite games is supposed to be the best for brain fitness. It involves solving a number of simple math problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division as quickly as possible. I really hope these games will enable me to preserve my intellect and my memory into old age.

People remember special gifts or presents that they receive. Why?

Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer.

Write at least 250 words.
Model Answer 1:
A person in his lifetime receives many gifts and presents and with the span of time he might forget about them. But special gifts are kind of gifts that he would remember for a long time or even in some cases forever. There are various reasons why we remember those short of special gifts and the most influential reasons are physiological, economic, memory and effort related to the gifts.

First of all, a gift, no matter what it is, is always special when it is from a very dear person. Gift received from parents or children on special occasions are cherished by most of us. In this case the cordiality and attachment it more important that the gift itself. For instance, many people treasure the gift they receive from a lover, friend, father, mother or a special person for a long time. The gift I got from my father on my 12th birthday was merely a diary and that I still consider a very special gift for me. This special gift reminds me my childhood and the love of my father and that’s why I will always remember it.

Second, people often wish for certain things which are they usually can’t buy and if such a present is given someone, it is likely that he will remember it for a long. For instance, when my uncle purchased me a laptop when I was around 18 years old, I was very excited and I will never forget the gift. Sometimes the surprise gifts are memorable and become special to some persons. For instance, the gift I gave to my college on his birthday became one of the special gifts for him as he later expressed. Thus these sorts of special gifts remind us the goodwill and love we actually receive from that person.

Third, expensive gifts often surprise people and can become their special gift. If a car is bought to someone which he would not be able to afford is ought to become a special gift as well. It is common human phycology that they would remember such gifts for a long.

Finally, the memory related to a gift is the most important factor for special gift. The small gift given by a father who is no more with the children would definitely become a valuable gifts that son/daughter. With time the gift might get lost or broken or even useless but the memory remains and thus the memory involved with a gift is an important factor and that’s why people would remember the gift.

Alternative Answer 2:
Receiving gifts is always very exciting and many people remember the gift for a long time. I think that all people like to receive presents from their relatives, friends, co-workers, etc. Personally, I am sure that a person does not remember all gifts he has received because it is impossible. However, I think that all people remember some gifts that were special. There are many reasons for people to remember those special gifts.
First of all, I believe that people remember special gifts because they were from very close and dear people. For example, I remember my parents presented me a ring when I was sixteen years old. It was not an expensive ring but it was very valuable for me and when I left my home and moved to another city I often looked at that ring and felt like my parents were somewhere near me. I felt their support and understanding. It is like people who are close to us give their small parts of their sole with that gift. They want us to remember them and they want to make us happy. Gifts sometimes remind us the memory of a certain time. For example : if a kid gets a toy at an early age and if he/she sees it when he/she grows older , it reminds him/he about the childhood periods. Besides, Special gifts always remind us about the caring or love of the person who gave it. These gifts are very valuable for people of all countries and nationalities.

Another reason why people remember special gifts because they were exactly what people wanted to have for a long time, but for some reasons, for example, they just could not afford those things, they did not buy them. So, when they receive those things as gifts it makes them very happy and they remember those moments for a long time. When I was a child my mother could not buy me a bicycle because we did not have enough money at that time. So, when my grandfather bought me my first bicycle it was the happiest moment in my life. Moreover, he personally taught me how to ride and I spent all my spare time after that event cycling. To sum up, I think that people remember special gifts because they presented with love.

Model Answer 3:
Usually, we get gifts on several occasions like birthdays, festivals and special moments in our lives but we remember only a few of them because of the special person who offered it and certain moment on which we have received. I will elucidate the reasons, why we commemorate the special gifts in our life, in the following paragraphs.
These presents inspires us towards our goals in life. For example, I got a wrist watch from my grandfather on my first day of college. I studied very hard to get admission in that institution. I rarely put on this watch and treat it as sovereign of my grandfather. It encourages me towards my goals and energizes me when I depress due to some failure. In addition, it makes me feel that my grandpa is with me even he passed away five years back. There is one more very special gift in my life from my university friends.
Few gifts maintain lifetime bondage between the people. For instance, in the final year of my university studies, my friends gave me a computer laptop on my birthday. Even they have settled in different corners of the world but I am still in touch with them because of this gift, whenever I see it, it recall my college days and instigate to phone them. In this way our friendship has become forever.
To sum up, presents show a specific affection from the givers to their recipients and they have a mysterious power which can encourage people.

Model Answer 4:
A gift is always special, but is there any special gifts one would remmeber? My answer would be a definite yes. Special gifts are always fondled and nurtured no matter how old it gets. An ideal exemplification supporting this context would be a gift from your loved ones.
Gifts always favour a better place for two hearts - the one gifting and the other being gifted, in my experience one gift I am going to nurture for life time would be the birth of my daughter. Another would be a gift from my wife on an anniversary day. These are always remembered and cherished because these gifts made indelible impact on my mind.
Remembering things, though not unique to humans, we are only living creature which can distinguish and remember, human physiology explains it better. Anything special always procures a place in our brain, which can be retrieved when needed.
In some cases, it is not the person but the present itself that is valued more. For example, a student awarded as the best cadet of the year. Such gifts that one receives in childhood are most likely to influence him for future.  Another case of influential gifts would be an object or living being that is going to stay with you for a long time. An example would be my case when the puppy that I got gifted from my mother at age of fifteen went on stay as my best friend further.
Next category of gifts remembered would be one that was out of reach always; a mediocre person being gifted with an expensive car which he never dreamt of buying would serve an example. Though it is said that gifts should not be valued or weighed, some gifts like the expensive car reserve place in our memory mainly on its market value or price.
In general, people remember gifts that become special in their life, few examples are mentioned above. This process is a part of human nature as we are made of such complex emotional bindings with objects or things that could give us pleasure.

IELTS Speaking Part 2: Cue Card/ Candidate Task Card. Describe someone in your family who you really admire.

IELTS Cue card - describe someone in your family

Model Answer 1:
I've got a small family with only five members and all of us are very close to each other and we love each other very much. Among them I love my mother more than anyone else in the whole world. I adore my mother for her caring, loving, adorable behaviors and wit. She is the person I can share everything with and that's the reason I worship her so much.
Possibly she was the first human I saw when I opened my eyes in this world. A relationship with a mother is divine and all of my childhood memories are either related to my mom or my school. I can still remember a day I was late to come back home after school and that's because there was a ceremony at the school I did not know about. All of a certain I found that my mother was entering through the school-gate to find me. I was so frightened that my mother would rebuke me for being late unnoticed and she must be mad at me. But to my best surprise, when my mother saw me  she had a warm smile in her face that I'll never forget till my last breath in this earth. Then she hugged me and gave me a kiss. I felt then that I love my mother more than me. She attended the program at the school and afterward we came back home together.
I spent my 19 years or so with my father and mother but I stay at a metropolitan city now for my education. Whenever I get vacation I meet my mother at my village home. On an average I spend 2/3 months with my mother each year but I talk to her over phone almost twice a day.
The reasons why I admire her are endless. She is caring, tender, she has got a big heart and she possesses love for everyone. She had been an ideal mother to raise 3 kids and making sure our education and moral values. She had made a lot of sacrifices all of her life and had never complained about anything to my best knowledge. She is the person who reminds me the power of love and caring.

Sample Answer 2:
A person I admire is my “Mother” because she is a fighter. You may ask why? To start of my mom got pregnant, with me at the age of 18. She did not have the support of my grandparents. Her own parents wanted to kick her out the house when they found out. She convinced them to let her stay, but she could not ask them for any help when raising the baby. Knowing all this my mom still decided to have the baby.
Besides not having the support of her parents, she also did not receive any help from my father. Although my father cared about me, he never gave my mom money or clothes to help her maintain me as a baby. She had to provide for me on her own. Going to school and working was killing her, but she wanted me to have a good life so she did anything that she could. My mom got pregnant again two years later, with the same man. The only thing was this time - it was worse. He left her life completely and her dad was sick. Therefore, he could no longer work. Now, not only did she have to provide for her two babies, but also for her parents. She was overwhelmed with everything happening; she didn't know what to do.
Finally, she decided to attend college and become a teacher for she can support the family she was now in charge of. It was not an easy thing to do. After she finished college it took her a while to find a job. It is not easy to find a job in Nicaragua. However, my mom never quit, no matter how hard things got for her she fought through it. To provide for her kids and parents.

Alternative Answer 3:
I have got 6 family members and all of them are very dear and close to me. If I need to pick one family member among them to talk about, that would be my father. My father’s name is (say your father’s name) and he is around 50 years old. He is the kind of person I would want my offspring to be. He did his graduation in a time when formal education was not people’s first choice. They would rather start earning from work rather than going to school. My father fought to ensure his education with the people who thought working or doing some sort of business has more value than education. But my father believed that education is the most important part of a man’s life. He heartily held the idea that education shapes a man’s life and is the kind of power and asset that would always accompany him.

I have lots of memories of my father and I see him every day. There exists a strong bonding between us that only two of us feel. I still remember those days of my childhood when I used to wait in the evening for my father to return from office. He would then play with me and help on completing my lessons. I vividly remember him sometimes taking me to the market and buy me gifts. When I was an infant he moved to the city from the village to ensure me better schooling and environment. That was a decision that has changed my life path. He himself helped me finishing my home works and lessons, always allured me of gifts if I could complete my study. Besides my education he taught me lots of moral values and important things of life.

He used to work in a Government organization and for his hard-working and kindness; he is revered by all of our relatives, his friends and neighbors.
He believes in humanity, good behavior, our creator, and leads a life that can be exemplary. He still does most of his own works and helps my mom on her house hold works. After retirement he has picked 2 new habits: gardening and teaching neighbors’ kids. He is a quiet and intelligent man who has benevolent heart and that what make him so admirable to me. He is still the pillar of our family and all of our family members love and respect him very much.

Cambridge IELTS -- 6 , Test-- 4 Writing task _ 2

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic:

Some people prefer to spend their lives doing the same things and avoiding change. Others, however think that change is always a good thing.

Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

You should write at least 250 words.

Sample Answer 1:
There are arguments that individuals should be refrained from doing new things and must stick to traditional methods. However, some people are convinced that individuals need to venture into some noble experiences in life. In my opinion, I would argue that alterations in some activities and practices are essential to achieve progress and success.

Primarily, it can never be denied that some people may become comfortable to the routine practices in life, which they are more accustomed. Clearly, people will not need to learn new things as they are already more cognizant about the activities that they habitually perform. For instance, in this modern era, the seniority group will find it confusing to read newspapers in an electronic tablet due to the fact that they are not aware of its new features and the proper operation of the gadget. For these reasons, the geriatric individuals do not need to learn the settings and the high technology applications as it will take them a long period of time to adapt this product of technology.

However, it can be argued that the life of people will become more adventurous if they opt to new trends and experiences. As can be expected, the progress and success in life are often achieved when a person tries to explore new ideas and practices, which might be beneficial for the improvement of his or her life. To illustrate, a businessman, who have experienced failures in his or her business, will resort to new strategies in order to make the business more firm and highly profitable. This can be done by abandoning the old-fashioned styles and techniques while accepting the modern ways, which could make the people’s lives more favorable. The new idea, new way of life and changes to the old way life often bring new opportunities to people and getting adapted to the changes is the primary means of survivals and advancement.

In conclusion, there is a heated argument whether people must remain to the conservative ways of life or to resort to modern trends. However, I personally believe that the ideology of success can be reached if people will embrace the new-fangled ways of living in the society.

Sample Answer 2:
Masses are changing according to the environment needs. In the past time, all people preferred to spend their lives doing the same things while only handful of people did not prefer it. However, nowadays the former category is lower in number. All people especially youngsters prefer to change and they expect the changes would be enjoyable and for better.

Firstly, in these days only young generation give full preference to changes in most of the cases. They embrace changes and think that changes will make their life meaningful. Secondly, changes create new opportunities which make us to leap forward. A new job, for instance,   might present challenges that push the person to adapt, acquire new knowledge, or add to their skill set. Thirdly, a change can represent a break with the past and an old routine which has become boring and predictable. Finally, as well as making life more fun and interesting, new experiences can be good for our physical and mental health. We find that changes can make us experienced and valuable.

On the flip side of the coin, people like old generation avoid changes in many cases because they do not want to become a materialistic. They opine we should give our full attention to one thing and to old way of traditional living. They mainly avoid major changes and thus remain in a safe side while missing many opportunities that the changes might have bought. They do not want to step outside their comfort zone, prefer following their daily habits. They feel satisfied with their circumstance. Perhaps they feel that routine gives them structure, maybe they are not fond of surprises or confident enough to face new challenges. They believed that staying secure and maintaining the current circumstance is the best way to live life safer.

To put it in a nutshell, both side seem to have their own merits. However I also persuade that change is unavoidable and necessary if someone wants to keep up with fast pace of modern life. Even if some people maintain a form of stability by following a routine, the world keeps spinning and evolving.

The diagrams below show the life cycle of the silkworm and the stages in the production of silk cloth.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

» Write at least 150 words.

Academic IELTS Writing task 1 Sample 94 image 1
Academic IELTS Writing task 1 Sample 94 image 2

Sample Answer 1:
The given pictorial show the life cycle of the silkworm and also shows the processes of silk cloth productions.

The life cycle of a silkworm begins from the eggs laid by the mother worm and from these eggs the silkworm larvae are generated after 10 days. The silkworm larva usually eats leaves like mulberry leaves and completes the second stage of the life cycle in 4-6 weeks. In their third stage, they create silk thread shells and remain there for another 3 to 8 days and then create an oval cocoons. The cocoon-stage lasts for around 16 days and they become moth in the final stage. With time the moths become grown-up and recycle the processes again.

The second picture describes the processes of the silk cloth production which has more than 5 stages. In the initial stage, the silk thread shells of the silk worm are selected and then boiled in the next stage. After boiling in water the threads are unwinded and they are usually 300 to 900 meter long. Then these are twisted and dyed and finally those are weaved to silks. The twisting, drying, weaving and then drying again process is done more than once as per necessary to produce fine quality silks.

Sample Answer 2:
The two given pictures describe the life cycle of silkworm and also illustrate the procedure of silk cloth production.

As is presented in the first picture lifecycle of silkworm begins with eggs laid by mother worm. Silkworm eggs transform into shape of silkworm larva after around 10 days. Then the second process starts, and in this stage larva usually eat leaves like mulberry leaves in order to grow up.

Food process lasts 4 to 6 weeks. Larva generates silk threads shells in the end of second stage. Third stage begins when silk thread shells create cocoon, this process usually lasts for 3 to 8 days. In final stage cocoons transform into moth after 16 days. And moths grow up and recycle whole procedure step by step.

As is observed from second picture, which describes the producing of silk cloth from silk worm, total stages of silk cloth production are five. Initially in first stage silk thread shells are selected and boiled into hot water. Shells are unwinded properly and unwinded shells are exactly 300 to 900m long. Then threads are twisted and dyed in dyer. And finally those silks are weaved and again dyed.

The process of twist and dry, weave and dry possibly repeated if it is necessary to produce high quality silk cloth.

Model Answer 3:
The diagrams illustrate the life cycle process of the silkworm as well as various steps in making of silk cloth.
Overall, life cycle of silkworm has four major stages which begin with eggs and end with cocoon. Similarly, there are four main steps in the production of silk cloth commencing with boiling into water and ending with dye process.

Initially, life cycle of silkworms starts with eggs which are laid by bee on the mulberry leaves. After this stage of cycle it becomes silkworm larva on mulberry leaves. It is then developed into silk thread within 4 to 6 weeks. After the last main stage of life cycle it is transform into cocoon which is necessary to make a silk cloth.

In the production of silk cloths, selected cocoons are boiled into the water. Unwinding is in the second process in which 300 to 900 mm threads are produced. Eventually, it is then twisted which is helpful for making waves. Finally, wave is ready for dye process in any colour for the final production of silk clothes.
